Final report and advice to the Minister of Health from the Medical Reference Group, sub-committee of the Health Workforce Advisory Committee. Some of the report’s critical recommendations include:

  • nationally focused strategic workforce planning
  • increasing the number of medical students
  • encouraging more medical students from rural backgrounds
  • postgraduate years 1 and 2 clinical attachments to include training with community-based health care and disability community-based care
  • ideas on improving recruitment and retention of New Zealand-trained doctors
